The best things in life are free.
Lauryn Clare, who goes by @lauryn.elizabeth_ on Instagram, revealed a Starbucks hack to help parents spend less money at the global coffee giant.
“If you can’t afford Starbucks for two, order your little one a puppy cup. It’s free and will make them as happy as a $5 cake,” Clare said in her viral Instagram caption.
The “puppy cup” also known as the “puppuccino” is a secret menu item at Starbucks that is usually offered to customers’ four-legged friends. The drink is served in a three-ounce espresso cup topped with fluffy whipped cream.
In the 5-second clip uploaded to Clare’s page, her 2-year-old daughter Adie is seen gobbling up her “puppy cup”, despite it being made for dogs.
The cup fits perfectly in her little hands as they lick up the whipped cream. Clare revealed a last-minute photo of her baby with a “pupuccino” which ended in a mess.
“I don’t usually do a Starbucks run, just because it’s expensive, but I had $4 and change left on the gift card,” Clare, 34, told TODAY.com.
With just $4.89 on her gift card, the crafty mom decided to think of a cheaper alternative to buying two drinks.
“So I asked, ‘Do you pay for ‘puppy cups?’ And the woman taking my order was like, ‘Oh, my God, no. What’s your dog’s name?’”
Awkwardly, Clare explained that the cup full of whipped cream was actually for her daughter and the barista was “very fine with it,” the mother added.
Although the Starbucks employee agreed to the “puppuccino” request, many parents online found it alarming.
“Taking advantage of the system,” one person commented.
“Welcome to the bottom of the free puppy cups,” sighed another.
“Is this right for business owners?” asked an observer. “Isn’t that theft?”
Meanwhile, Clare isn’t the only mum to practice this “brilliant” money-saving hack.
“I call it a baby cup! Sometimes I get cookie crumbs or ask for chocolate chips on top! If you have a good worker, they will!” an observer laughed.
“In this economy? We’re both getting puppy cups,” one mom laughed.
“My kids bark at me and pretend to be dogs so that a puppy cup will work,” one prankster confessed.
Despite naysayers, Starbucks has no plans to end their “puppy cups.”
“We love seeing the different ways our customers brighten the days of loved ones with Starbucks,” a company spokesperson told TODAY.com. “Customers can order a side of whipped cream with the purchase of a drink at no additional charge.”
